Finally Done with this history book. Poor Deranged Mary, Bloody Mary as she was dubbed, because of her persecution of the Protestants of England. Poor girl was rejected by her Father, because he wanted to marry another woman, then she was courted by her father and given her "place of legitimacy" back before her father died. Then she was married to a foreign man, for convenience and political reasons. She fancied herself in love with this cold man, who never cared for her. She thought herself pregnant, with out ever having been known by her husband, sounds like she had very bad case of endrometriosis, or some other type of horrid bleeding disease, nearly felt she was normal during that part.
I used to think being Queen or Princess would be a fabulously wonderful thing, I don't think so much anymore. These ladies were used by the men in their lives pitifully, and never a thought was paid to their happiness or wants or even needs. They couldn't really be allowed to act for themselves without having a male justify the thought. When Elizabeth took the throne, she was able to somewhat use her intellect to her advantage, but she had to give up the idea of love and marriage, to prove a point to the men that surrounded her, and to rule her country the way it needed at the time.

The reign of Mary Tudor James Anthony Froude 9781171512288 Books Reviews

Very dry and not difficult to sustain interest. I am a huge Tudor fan but this biography is outdated and written in an archaic style.
This is good reading for a history buff.
Given the author's view of history and equal dislike of Protestantism and of papal control, this graphic treatment of the reign of Queen Mary (Tudor) reads like an authoritative and gripping novel. He situates the action of the main movers (the lords, the council, the Monarch and her husband - Prince Philip of Spain - Elizabeth, the French King, the English Catholic population, the Protestant opponents of the old Catholic order, Cardinal Pole and ex-achbishop Cranmer) within the chance and mischance of blind events. It could have been otherwise, but this is how it was...
"The Reign of Mary Tudor" is part of a 12-volume history of England written by the 19th Century British historian James Anthony Froude. His writing is dramatic, with Protestant moral overtones.

This is not an easy book to read, and I at first thought to give it only 3 stars; I then decided the book should not be penalized because of my inattention and lack of focus. Upon reflection, I decided that it is a valuable book, worth the effort.

Mary Tudor was a tragic figure. The legitimate daughter of Henry VIII by his Spanish Queen, Katherine, she became illegitimate when Henry denounced his marriage to Katherine. A review is not the place to delve into the intricacies of Henry's marriages, but suffice it to say that the twists and windings of his relationships with women require close attention on the part of the reader.

Mary eventually became queen in her own right, and married Philip of Spain (who later became the king of Spain who launched the Armada against Mary's Sister, Queen Elizabeth). Mary tried to undo her father's break with the Pope, instigated the persecution of those who strayed from strict Catholic faith, burned hundreds of "heretics" and earned the sobriquet "Bloody Mary".

Most modern pop-histories of this period treat events as tales of lust. In fact, the power politics of both Europe and England in particular drove events as much or more than individual desires (including Henry's). The strong point of this book is that (if you pay close attention) it illustrates the interconnectedness of European affairs, both politically and in religious matters.

I am very glad that I did not set "The Reign of Mary Tudor" aside. After some second thoughts, I determined that this is a valuable book for those who want to learn the details of a fascinating period and of a tragic, ill-fated daughter of a king. If, however, you are looking for light reading, stay away.
Since I really did not know too much about Mary Tudor I decided to read this book. It was went into depth about her whole life post Henry V!!! and during her reign. The author wrote about every person, law, letter, place, war, etc associated with Mary and the time that she ruled England.
.
It was a little too much for my basic knowledge at the moment. Though I enjoyed the book and learned alot, all this information was a bit much for me. I think I would have done well with a less informative book.

If you would like to learn and read all about Mary Tudor, this is the book for you.
Oh so Victorian! Typical of the era in which it was written, this very biased history exhibits a romantic view of Mary I and a lack of of footnotes where there ought to be footnotes and a number of footnotes where they are not required. The melodramatic tone used to discuss various executions had me chuckling over something somber and gruesome. The author made no attempt to hide his outrageously biased opinions dismissing all blame for the mass burnings and executions of the era. Not sorry I read it but I wouldn't trust any of the information in it without cross referencing from a reliable source.
Readers should be aware that this is not a modern book.
